Spice up your summer season by planning an “Old School” Barbecue for family and friends. Since Memorial Day is around the corner and marks the unofficial start of summer, you can spike up your cookout or indoor party with a great semi-healthy tasty menu. Of course, you will have the traditional grilled burgers and Hot dogs. You don’t want to be cooking and serving all day so limit your sides. Make what is quick, easy and tasty so you can enjoy your company. You may want to have more vegetable dishes as opposed to starchy. Most people enjoy lighter food on a hot day and plenty of drink or water with lemon or oranges. To ramp it up for guests, make one special dish to go along with the salad, veggies, burgers and hot dogs. Coca-Cola Ribs or Chicken and Veggie Skewers are a great dish. The Ribs are quick and easy to make and require only 5 ingredients. The best part is starting them the night before in the Crockpot. The Chicken & Veggie skewers are very simple and require 3-4 ingredients.
Show your appreciation on Memorial Day for those who lost their lives while protecting our country so that others may live. Remember to teach your children the meaning of the holiday by taking them to a Memorial Day Parade or Service. Most major cities have parades and other commemorations. Take a moment of remembrance for our fallen heroes.
Lastly, don’t forget the deserts consisting of the Fruit bowl, Jello Mold and Pound Cake and of course your R&B playlist of your favorite classic Singers or Groups such as Peabo Bryson, The Bar-Kays, New Birth(Just to name a few). Oh you might want to set-up a video for those who don’t know how to do the Terminal Reaction Dance, that is one sure way to get your guest in a dancing mood. Get that Party started!
TERMINAL REACTION DANCE
Going to the Gym or making time to workout in the Park ? Bump up your workout routine with some old school R&B music. Research has shown exercise and music make such a great combination. Listening to music when you workout isn’t exactly a new concept. We do know that it improves your workout and exercise performance. Exercising along with the right kind of music will better enhance your overall mental performance. Studies have also revealed, those individuals who participated in the research performed more than twice as well on a verbal fluency test after listening to music while exercising, than those individuals did after exercising without music. The research studies didn’t reveal whether the improvement lasts very long, or whether it diminished quickly, but it seems that some mental stimulation worked for the brain like exercise works for the body. To date, lots of questions remain unanswered and that is why Backbeatrnb has come up with a playlist of old school music that you can “Pump up” your exercise routine with while working out.
Belinda owner and creator of Backbeatrnb did a workout at Eastern Athletics in Melville, NY. While working out, she discovered her playlist of the following songs gave her a better workout, because her focus was on the music and not on the workout; which made her routine go by faster. Here are the top 10 R&B Old School Jams that Belinda recommends for a great workout:
1) “Disco Nights ” by GQ
2) “By the Time this Night is over” by Peabo Bryson and Kenny G
3) “Show and Tell” by Al Wilson
4) ” I do Love You” by GQ
5) “Baby I’m for Real” by The Originals
6) “Treat her like a Lady” by The Temptations
7) “Rumors”by Timex Social Club
8) “In the Rain” by The Dramatics”
9) “What Becomes of a Broken Heart Ache” by Jimmy Ruffin
10) “This is How We do it” by Montel
So, no matter how much you dread your workout a playlist of great R&B music can give you the ability to make you move, change your mood and you can use those tunes to escape any negativity in your life. You will feel mentally and physically great when it’s over as well as sleep through the night.
Otis Redding’s name is synonymous with soul music ! Redding left a legacy of recordings made during the four-year period from his first sessions with Stax and Volt Records in 1963 until his death in 1967. Ironically, he made a great impact on the R&B charts beginning with “Pain In My Heart” in 1964. The posthumous release of “Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay”, a landmark song was recorded four days before Redding’s death. It spiked to #1 and stayed there for four weeks in early 1968. It marked new directions for the singer towards soul-folk-pop and R&B genre.Redding became known as the voice of soul music after he was discovered recording “These Arms of Mine”,the song quickly took off, rising to No. 20 on the R&B charts in 1963 and that’s when his career soared. Redding began recording for Stax Records, playing the guitar and arranging his own songs. He was known for his energy in the studio and, in 1965, recorded the album Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul in one day. He released “I’ve Been Loving Your Too Long” that same year, and “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)” a year later. In 1967, Redding started his own label, Jotis Records, hoping to become more involved behind the scenes. As his career was taking off, he died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. The song “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” became his first and only No. 1 hit in 1968. He was inducted into the Rock-In-Roll Hall of Fame March 11, 1989.
Did you know Carl Douglas’s signature hit song ” Kung Fu Fighting” was created in less than 15 minutes in a recording session! In 1974, Indian-born music producer Biddu asked Douglas to sing the vocal on the song “I Want to Give You My Everything.” Biddu needed another song for the B-side to the single, so he came up with a melody for some lyrics about martial arts! This craze was sweeping the United States in the 70’s. “The resultant song “Kung Fu Fighting” was recorded in a mere ten minutes and was released as the A-side to the single “. “Kung Fu Fighting” spiked to #1 on the pop charts in both the UK and America and went on to sell over nine million copies worldwide.
“Kung Fu Fighting” was such a tremendous success, it gave Douglas the distinction of being the first Jamaican-born singer to score a #1 hit song in the United States. His follow-up single “Dance the Kung Fu” bombed in the United States, but was a top 20 hit in Britain. Carl had another top 30 hit in England with “Run Back” in 1977. He released the albums “Love, Peace and Happiness” in 1979 and “Keep Pleasing Me” in 1983. One of the most favorite of funky disco novelty one-hit wonder songs of the 70’s, “Kung Fu Fighting” has been featured on many soundtracks to such films as “Bowfinger, “Rush Hour 3, “Epic Movie, “Daddy Day Care, “Mortal Thoughts, “Beverly Hills Ninja,” and “Spirit of ’76.” Carl Douglas now lives in Hamburg, Germany and owns a publishing company.
“The Intruders were the very foundation of “The Sound Of Philadelphia”. Formed in 1960, they originally consisted of Sam (aka”Little Sonny”) Brown, Eugene (aka”Bird”) Daughtry, Phillip (aka”Phil”) Terry and Robert( aka”Big Sonny”) Edwards. In 1969, Sam Brown was replaced as lead singer by Bobby Starr, only to rejoin the group in 1973. In 1965, The Intruders had already developed a vocal sound that was unique. Blending Philly’s street corner doo-wop tradition with a gospel flavor, the result of those two combinations had become known as “the Philadelphian sound” and that proved to be successful for the group. The Intruders were the foundation of what they called “The Sound Of Philadelphia”, that sound was spreading like the Chicago Brush fire. The Philly sound owes it all to THE INTRUDERS.The Intruders had a string of classic songs that hit the R&B charts but “Cowboys to Girls”(R&B #1, Pop #6) remains the only chart-topping single of their career. It was a 1968 Top 10 Pop and R&B smash, that was awarded an R.I.A.A. gold disc for one million sales in mid-May 1968. I’ll Always Love My Mama” was #6 on R&B and #36 on the Pop Chart. Songwriter Kenny Gamble said “his mother Ruby was the inspiration for “I’ll Always Love My Mama”, she died March 10, 2012, in Mount Airy, Pennsylvania, at age 96. Unfortunately, Sam (aka”Little Sonny”) Brown(Died April 21, 1995, ) and Eugene(aka “Bird) Daughtry (Died Dec 25, 1994) have passed on. The Legacy of the Intruders continues, in 1996 The Intruders were inducted into The Hall of Fame and a Star in their honor was placed on the Walk of Fame on Broad Street in Philadelphia.
Currently, they are scheduled for a 2017 SoulTrain cruise with Celebrity Cruise hope to see you on board.

JANET JACKSON’S NEW VIDEO CALLED “DAMN BABY” RELEASED ! UNBREAKABLE WORLD TOUR CUT SHORT!
In addition to her new video, Janet Jackson has announced to an “ET” source that she is pregnant with her first baby. She announced her baby news after postponing her tour numerous times over the past year. Unfortunately, no reason was ever given, but now we may why. Since Ms.Jackson is reportedly having a baby, this was probably the reason. Ms. Jackson who turns 50 on May 16, announced last month that she will be postponing her tour to start a family with husband Wissam Al Mana. “We’re in the second leg of the tour and there actually has been a sudden change,” Jackson explained in a video posted to Twitter on April 6. “I thought it was important that you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning our family, so I’m going to have to delay the tour.
Backbeatrnb wishes to Congratulate Janet Jackson and her Hubby on the future arrival of their Baby!
REMEMBERING A LEGENDARY INSTRUMENTAL SONG ” GREEN ONIONS” BY BOOKER T & THE MG.’S
“Green Onions”, the instrumental by Booker T.& The MG’s, featured 35 of the most harmonious and exciting minutes of instrumental music in any category that one could purchase in 1962. there’s not a key or note out of place on this record. It’s still a piece of music that never dies, as soon as you hear that instrumental you know it’s “Green Onions”. “Even “Mo’ Onions,” an effort to repeat the success of “Green Onions,” doesn’t repeat anything from the earlier track except the tempo.
