RIP AL JARREAU !

One of our greatest legends of Jazz has died, Al Jarreau a seven-time Grammy award winning Artist passed away on February 17, 2017, at the age of 76. He had recently announced his retirement from touring engagements due to exhaustion. Over the years he endured cardiac and respiratory issues.

  Mr. Jarreau had been touring for nearly 50 years and throughout his career, he was best known for his versatility and won 7 Grammys overall and did so across the Pop, Jazz, and R&B categories. Known to his wider audiences for the 1980’s theme to “MoonLighting” (An American tv show which starred Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd) he dominated the R&B charts with hits like “Were In this Love Together”, “Your Precious Love” and Trouble in Paradise”. His singing style made him one of greatest Jazz vocalist in the industry.  Fans around the world will miss his live performances however, his music will live on forever. Newport is a great place for  Museum or Mansions Tours, it is also a place that can be quite pleasing to the pallet. THE HONEY CONE ARE STILL AS SWEET AS THEIR MUSIC !

We all remember The Honey Cone, an American R&B soul all-girl singing group. They are best remembered for their Billboard #1 hit single, “Want Ads”, “Stick Up” and “One Money don’t Stop No Show”. They departed from Motown Records and signed up with Hotwax records operated by Holland–Dozier–Holland. The Honey Cone consisted of lead singer, Edna Wright, (sister of Darlene Love) Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark . The group formed in 1969 and disbanded in 1973. However, they reunited in February 2014 on the third sailing of the Soul Train Cruise. Original members Edna Wright and Shelly Clark White along with Melody Perry performed two concerts that included their score of hit songs and even a tribute song to Earth, Wind and Fire called “September ” as a connection song for Shelly who is married to one of the Band members. Backbeatrnb wants to Spotlight “Honey Cone” and remember this great R&B group. We hope they will continue to perform from time to time as they still have a lot of fans who enjoy their blend of harmony and soulful sweetness.

BRUNCH & JAZZ IN THE NEW YORK HARBOR!

Everything about the Hornblower Sunday Brunch Jazz Cruise is outstanding. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather on a sunny summer day. The food was to die for.

As you enter upon the ship, the three-piece band is playing and singing great songs.  They had great voices and we loved their song selections. When they took a break, we headed upstairs and soaked up the sun while cruising around the New York harbor taking in the sights like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park and the Freedom Tower. We went downstairs and listened to the band some more and actually danced several times to some of the greatest Jazz played. From the time we arrived on the Hornblower Infinity we were treated like royalty.  Backbeatrnb recommends you try this wonderful afternoon with Jazz and Brunch on the Harbor! FOUR TOPS & TEMPTATIONS CONCERT AFTERMATH!

The Four Tops and the Temptations can never go wrong when they perform . Their “Outstanding” performance on June 25th at the NYCB Theater @ Westbury was one of Euphoria .  The Four Tops started off the show with some of their classic hits we all know and love. “Bernadette”, “Ain’t Know Woman”, “Keeper Of The Castle”, just to name a few. From  beginning to end, the audience rarely stayed in their seats as the classics refused to dry up, hit after hit after hit. Even though, their original lead singer Levi Stubbs and the other 2 great Tops Obie Benson and Lawrence Payton are no longer here, they were definitely there in spirit and soul. It was great to see the original Founding Member Abdul “Duke ” Fakir.  At age 80,still going strong and is the lone original remaining member. He has assembled a solid group  (since the passing of Levi, Obie and Lawrence) and have proven themselves to be a legendary act. Their powerful lungs combined with the old Motown Flavor, the Four Tops puts it out there, ” to get love you have to give love. They do just that with their performances and the audience certainly could feel the love.

The Temptations gave an energetic performance and as usual they were outstanding. Their soulful tribute to their fallen members left not a dry eye in the house. The audience enjoyed many of their old classics and some new. They engaged the audience in a lot of their hit songs and and left us wanting more & more. When they sang one of their many signature hits “Treat her like a Lady”. the Audience went wild, especially coming from an age group of 21 to about 80 years old. It was great watching how they could get the audience to sing along  with them. Especially, when Otis Williams, one of the original Temptations performed. He bought down the house with his trademark baritone voice. The audience roared and for 74 years of age,Otis Williams not only looks good but he  can still do the Temptation walk with such style and grace.  The Temptations and The Four Tops pull it off again and that good old Motown feeling was still buzzing as we walked out into the night.

After seeing this show and watching the audience’s reaction to both groups,The Temptations and The Four Tops continue to entertain and give audiences that Motown harmony we all love.  There is a time and a place for bringing back old music and wish that I could have seen them in the 60’s or early 70’s. I know it would have been a different experience. But, it was great experiencing this nostalgic show that brings back so many good memories audiences alike will continue to follow them. They are one of the Best.

PUMP UP YOUR WORKOUT AT THE GYM WITH THESE 10 OLD SCHOOL JAMS !

Going to the Gym or making time to workout in the Park ? Bump up your workout routine with some old school R&B music. Research has shown exercise and music make such a great combination. Listening to music when you workout isn’t exactly a new concept. We do know that it improves your workout and exercise performance. Exercising along with the right kind of music will better enhance your overall mental performance. Studies have also revealed, those individuals who participated in the research performed more than twice as well on a verbal fluency test after listening to music while exercising, than those individuals did after exercising without music. The research studies didn’t reveal whether the improvement lasts very long, or whether it diminished quickly, but it seems that some mental stimulation worked for the brain like exercise works for the body. To date, lots of questions remain unanswered and that is why Backbeatrnb has come up with a playlist of old school music that you can “Pump up” your exercise routine with while working out.

Belinda owner and creator of Backbeatrnb did a workout at Eastern Athletics in Melville, NY.
