Chubby Tavares: A Voice That Carried Generations

From the moment he was born — a hefty 10 lbs 14 oz — he earned the nickname “Chubby,” a name that would come to belong not just to a boy, but to a legend. Born Antone Lawrence Tavares in Providence, Rhode Island, on June 2, 1944, Chubby carried more than just a name: he carried a gift.

Music was in his blood. Growing up amid the harmonies of his father and surrounded by his brothers, Chubby discovered early on that his voice — rich, soulful, and unmistakable — had the power to move people.

From Humble Beginnings to R&B Royalty

As a young man, Chubby and his brothers formed the group that would become known as Tavares. What began as local performances under the name “Chubby and the Turnpikes” soon evolved into a force of R&B, soul, funk, and disco that would define an era.

Under the Tavares banner, Chubby’s vocals carried hit after hit: songs like “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” “It Only Takes a Minute,” “Remember What I Told You to Forget,” and the unforgettable “More Than a Woman.” Their music filled dance floors, radios, and hearts.

In 1978, the group earned the ultimate recognition: a Grammy Awards for Album of the Year — thanks in part to their contribution to the soundtrack of the film Saturday Night Fever.

The Main Ingredient was formed in the 1960s, but it wasn’t until the early 1970s that the group truly began to find its footing. Initially known as The Poets, they changed their name to The Main Ingredient in 1964, shortly before the addition of Cuba Gooding Sr. as their lead vocalist. Born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Quincy Jones began his musical journey at a young age, showing an early affinity for jazz. He went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where his talent blossomed. Over the years, he became a renowned composer, producer, and arranger, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business, from Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. 

Jones’s career took off in the 1950s when he worked as a musical director for the legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong. He then transitioned to arranging and producing, where he truly shined. One of his most iconic works is the groundbreaking album Thriller (1982) by Michael Jackson, which remains the best-selling album of all time. Jones’s innovative production techniques and ability to blend pop, rock, and R&B created a sound that captivated audiences worldwide.   

Throughout his career, Quincy Jones earned a staggering 28 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists in Grammy history. His work on film soundtracks, including The Wiz and In the Heat of the Night, showcased his versatility and creativity beyond the studio. Additionally, he was a pivotal figure in the creation of the humanitarian anthem “We Are the World,” which united artists in a powerful call for social change.  Jones’s influence extended far beyond his music. He was an advocate for social justice and a mentor to countless musicians, helping to pave the way for future generations. His commitment to diversity and inclusion in the arts set a standard for the industry, inspiring artists to use their voices for positive change.

Announcing the 2025 Nominees for the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame!

The National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Foundation has revealed the nominees for its Class of 2025, honoring some of the most iconic names in Rhythm & Blues. This year’s nominees include celebrated artists such as Sade, Earth, Wind & Fire, John Legend, Berry Gordy, The Isley Brothers, and Patti LaBelle. From a total of 40 candidates, the ten nominees with the most votes will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  A press conference will be held on February 12, 2025, to announce the inductees and provide information about the event schedule and locations. Fans can also purchase tickets for the Hall of Fame Music Weekend starting that day, which will celebrate the rich history and future of R&B. The induction ceremony may take place in one of three cities: Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; or Shreveport, Louisiana. 

 

Additionally, the Hall of Fame is in discussions with major cable networks to broadcast the 2025 induction ceremony, highlighting the significant impact these artists have made in music and culture. The previous induction ceremony, held in October 2024, honored legends like Jeffrey Osborne, Kenny Lattimore, Regina Belle, and more. Since its establishment in 2013, the Hall of Fame has inducted over 300 influential figures, including James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Prince.

With a heavy heart, we bid farewell to Tito Jackson, a cherished member of the Jackson 5 who’s talent and spirit left an unforgettable mark on the music world. Tito was not just a musician; he was a beacon of joy, creativity, and resilience. From the moment he stepped onto the stage, his guitar strummed the chords of our hearts, and his soulful voice transported us to a place where music truly knows no bounds.

As one of the founding members of the Jackson 5, Tito played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Motown and defining the era of pop music. A Tribute to Frankie Beverly: The Soulful Maestro

Frankie Beverly, the legendary frontman of the iconic R&B group Maze, has tragically passed away at the age of 77. His soulful voice and captivating performances have left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Beverly’s musical journey began in Philadelphia, where he honed his singing skills in local churches. His early career included stints with groups like the Silhouettes and the Butlers, where he gained valuable experience and recognition. In the early 1970s, Beverly and his band relocated to San Francisco, where they met Marvin Gaye, who became a mentor and helped them secure a record deal with Capitol Records. 

As Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, the group released a string of critically acclaimed albums that seamlessly blended soul, jazz, and funk. Their music, characterized by irresistible grooves and thought-provoking lyrics, resonated powerfully with fans, earning them a dedicated following and admiration from their peers.

Despite their immense talent and popularity, Maze often faced challenges in breaking through to the mainstream pop market. However, their unwavering commitment to their craft and their loyal fanbase ensured their enduring legacy.

The official Maze Facebook page paid a heartfelt tribute, stating, “He lived his life with pure soul, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family, and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all.” 

Beverly’s retirement earlier this year marked the end of an era. His farewell tour was a celebration of his extraordinary career and a chance for fans to say goodbye to one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. His passing is a profound loss for the music world, but his music will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come.
