R&B TRIBUTE SONGS

by BELINDA

One of the most touching “Tribute songs” for over 3 decades is a song called ” Missing You” written, composed and produced by Lionel Richie in 1984. Diana Ross sang the song which captured the long standing friendship between herself and Marvin. They were life long friends as well as label mates having joined Motown in the early 60’s. We are all “Missing you” Marvin Gaye but your music lives on forever.

MISSING YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YA!

Another great, touching and powerful tribute song is “Happy Birthday to Ya” written, produced and performed by the legendary Stevie Wonder. He was inspired to write the song in 1981 because of his involvement and campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday a national holiday.

NIGHT SHIFT

“Night Shift” was written by The Commodores then lead singer Walter Orange along with Dennis Lambert and Franne Golde as a great Tribute to the late Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye. The song was originally recorded in 1984 but became a mega hit in 1985.

“Originally recorded in 1984, Night Shift was the first hit attained by the Commodores following Lionel Richie’s departure from the group. It was also their biggest hit after Richie’s departure, peaking at number three on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart, and rising to number one on the Hot Black Singles chart ; the single also became a huge success on the Adult Contemporary and the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales charts in the first half of that year”.
