The Main Ingredient was formed in the 1960s, but it wasn’t until the early 1970s that the group truly began to find its footing. Initially known as The Poets, they changed their name to The Main Ingredient in 1964, shortly before the addition of Cuba Gooding Sr. as their lead vocalist. With Cuba’s powerful and emotive voice, the group set the stage for what would become an unforgettable journey through R&B and soul.

Their early sound was a blend of doo-wop and pop influences, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the group really hit their stride, embracing the smooth soul sound that would define their career. “From Harmony to Stardom: Shirley Jones of The Jones Girls in The Spotlight”

In the realm of R&B harmony, Shirley Jones stands as a testament to the enduring power of sisterly voices. Today, we embark on a journey into the heart of her artistry, delving into the inspirations that fueled her passion and the challenges she navigated as a woman in the music industry. Through her candid reflections, we gain a glimpse into the soul of a true R&B legend, her voice still resonating with the power to move and inspire.   

BB:   Congratulations on your new single, “When You Love Somebody”! What inspired you to write this song?

SJ:    I did not write this song, it was written by Michon Young and presented to me towards the end of the pandemic.  I fell in love with the lyrics and felt it is the perfect song for now because coming out of the pandemic, we all  need to spread much more love among each other, the same love we feel for our family and loved ones.

BB:  What is the message you hope listeners take away from this song?

SJ:  The importance of learning to listen and understanding others, strangers and  people you meet along the way. Embracing    them with love and not hate. 

BB:   What are your thoughts on the state of R&B music today

SJ:    With R&B music today, there is too much explicit sexual love! And not enough good old fashion cliche love &                          love for your fellow man. Most don’t use a lot of lyrics, they”re just saying the same thing over and over again. They                          use much graphic sexual language as possible to get on the charts with no real feeling to it. Not all bad because                                there are some that remind me of 70’s and  80’s R&B when it was real. Real instruments, real singing.   

BB:  Can you share some of your earliest memories of forming The Jones Girls and what inspired you to pursue a career in music together?

SJ:    My sisters and I started out singing background for our mom Mary Frazier Jones, who was the first black gospel singer signed by RCA records. She was also musical director at our church and knew voices. She trained us and taught us how harmonize and how to use our individual voices to blend and sound like one voice. Always rehearsing us in the living room while our Godmother played the piano. Most fond memories are those of us rehearsing and practicing from young girls to grown women, practiced even more so after the success of our first album with Gamble and Huff.   

BB:  The Jones Girls are known for their harmonious vocals. How did you develop your unique sound, and what was the secret to your vocal chemistry as a group?

SJ:   Our tight harmonies were groomed and nurtured by our mother.   

BB: “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else” and “Nights Over Egypt” are classic hits loved by fans(and Me) around the world. What stories or emotions were behind those songs, and how did they come to life in the studio?  
SJ:  When Gamble and Huff presented us with the song “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else,” we knew it was a hit. We were surprised to learn that it had also become a disco hit. We thought it was too slow for disco, and we would cringe when we played it at clubs, wondering if people would get up and dance. But they always did, and the song gave us our first gold single, which is now platinum. On the song “Nights Over Egypt,” my two co-writers, Dexter Wansel and Cynthia Biggs, decided to forgo any leads or step-outs and let the unison and harmonies be the lead. All that practice and rehearsing paid off, as the song was  a success.

BB:  Can you tell us about some of the challenges and memorable moments you encountered while touring and performing together?

SJ:   There are so many memorable performances. Our first tour was when we opened for ‘The O’Jays.’ We learned so much about entertaining large crowds from being out there with them. The four shows we did with ‘The Jacksons,’ and we met them. Still looking for those pics that were lost. Our tour with Teddy Pendergrass, where we had truly perfected our craft and were getting standing ovations regularly. The challenges were, of course, a fast-paced lifestyle, one airport after the other, one city after the other, huge tour bus rides, and living in different hotels constantly, but it all comes with the price of being successful.

BB:  Your music has had a lasting impact on R&B and soul music. How do you view the evolution of the music industry since your heyday, and what advice would you give to aspiring artists today?

SJ:  Music has changed tremendously in some aspects, but one thing remains the same: practice, practice, practice, know your craft. Be prepared so when the opportunity presents itself you can grab it.  

BB: Are there any upcoming tours, projects or collaborations you’d like to share with your fans?

SJ:   I am working quite a bit before this year is over with upcoming shows in Raleigh, NC, Ontario, CA, Hopkins, SC, and Chicago on New Year’s Eve. Starting 2024 off with The Soul Train Cruise in January, a 20-city tour with ChiLites, Stylistics, and others in February, Portugal and Greece in May, June, and the UK in July. So, I am quite busy. Thankful to be busy keeping the legacy alive and thankful that people still want to hear the beautiful body of work my sisters and I have contributed to the world. 

BB:  Finally, can you offer a message or words of wisdom to your devoted fans who continue to cherish your music?

SJ:  My sisters and I are all about Love,  loving each other as human beings. We put God first which is Love, learn your craft, learn the business of music and practice, practice, practice.

 As a final note, I want to express my gratitude to Ms. Jones for sharing her incredible insights and experiences with BackBeat R&B.  Her journey through the music industry, filled with unforgettable moments and unwavering passion for her craft, has been truly inspiring. A Night of Musical Magic at Grasso’s: Mala Waldron and James Cammack Shine!

When Mala Waldron , a renowned vocalist and pianist, joined forces with world-famous bassist James Cammack on the dimly lit stage of Grasso’s Saturday night, the atmosphere transformed into an enchanting realm of pure sonic magic, captivating jazz enthusiasts.  With each note, each word, they transported the audience into a world where melodies wove tales of love, longing, and celebration. It was a night of incredible performances that left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone in attendance.  The evening began with an elegant nod to Bill Withers as Mala and James effortlessly brought “Just the Two of Us” to life. Their rendition was nothing short of mesmerizing, as Mala’s voice was like a caress, and the piano keys were her willing accomplices. While James’s bass provided a steady, pulsating heartbeat to the song. It was a warm embrace of music that wrapped around the audience, inviting them to sway and savor every moment.

Transitioning seamlessly into Norah Jones’s “I Don’t Know Why,” Mala Waldron’s voice took on an ethereal quality. Bobby Eli, MFSB Guitarist Who Shaped Philly Soul, Dies at 71

The music world is in mourning  the passing of Bobby Eli, one of the most influential guitarists and producers of the Sound of Philadelphia. Eli died on August 18, 2023, at the age of 77.

Eli was born in Philadelphia in 1946 and began playing guitar at a young age. He quickly became one of the most in-demand session musicians in the city, playing on countless hit records throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Eli was a founding member of MFSB, the legendary house band for Philadelphia International Records. He played on virtually all of the label’s seminal hits, including “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)”, “Love Train”, and “Backstabbers”. He also wrote or co-wrote many of these hits, including “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”, “Sideshow”, and “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely”.   

Eli’s guitar playing was a key part of the Sound of Philadelphia, a genre that blended soul, funk, and disco. His signature sound was characterized by his use of wah-wah pedals and his ability to create a driving, rhythmic groove.

In addition to his work with MFSB, Eli also produced records for many other artists, including Deniece Williams, George Clinton, and the Three Tenors of Soul. He was a true pioneer of soul music, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless artists today.

Eli’s passing is a major loss for the music world. He was a gifted musician, songwriter, and producer, and his work helped to shape the sound of an entire era. He will be remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of soul music.

Eli’s legacy will live on through his music. His songs continue to be enjoyed by generations of fans, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless artists today. He was a true pioneer of soul music, and his work will continue to inspire musicians for generations to come.

Phyllis Hyman: A Singer for the Ages As We Remember her Legacy!

I was 16 years old when I first heard Phyllis Hyman sing. It was on the radio, and the song was “You Know How to Love Me.” I was instantly captivated by her voice. It was so rich and soulful, and she had such a powerful range. I knew right then and there that I was going to be a fan for life.

I’ve been listening to Phyllis Hyman’s music ever since, and her songs have always resonated with me. She sang about love, loss, pain, and redemption, and her lyrics were always honest and relatable. She was a master of the ballad, but she could also belt out a powerful soul number with the best of them.

One of my favorite things about Phyllis Hyman was her versatility. She could sing any genre of music, and she always put her own unique stamp on it. She was a jazz singer, a disco diva, a soul queen, and a Broadway star. She could do it all.

Phyllis Hyman’s career was cut short by her tragic death in 1995, but her music lives on. She is one of the most important and influential singers of our time, and her legacy will continue to inspire people for generations to come. I’m so grateful that I got to grow up listening to Phyllis Hyman’s music. Her songs have helped me through some tough times, and they’ve always been there to lift my spirits. I know that her music will continue to be a source of comfort and inspiration for me for many years to come.

The Spotlight Is On An Unforgettable Night of Jazz with the Orrin Evans Jazz Quartet At BirdLand NYC!

The Orrin Evans Quartet, led by pianist Orrin Evans, features Caleb Curtis on saxophone, Leandro Pellegrino on guitar, Vincente Archer on bass, and Mark Whitfield II on drums.

From the moment they took the stage, it was clear that this group of musicians was something special. They began the night with a lively upbeat number that immediately had the audience tapping their feet and nodding their heads in time with the music. Evans’ piano playing was particularly impressive, with his fingers dancing across the keys in a way that was both precise and passionate.

As the set progressed, the quartet showcased their versatility and range, playing a variety of tunes.  Curtis saxophone playing was particularly noteworthy, with his smooth, soulful tone lending a beautiful warmth to the group’s sound. Meanwhile, Pellegrino’s guitar work was equally impressive, with his skillful fingers coaxing out complex, intricate melodies that added depth and texture to the quartet’s sound. 

Throughout the set, Archer’s bass playing provided a steady, grounding presence, anchoring the group’s sound and allowing the other musicians to showcase their skills. And finally, Whitfield’s drumming was the perfect complement to the other musicians, providing a driving beat and rhythmic foundation that kept the audience engaged and energized.   

Overall, the Orrin Evans Jazz Quartet’s performance at the Famous Birdland Jazz Theater was a masterclass in jazz music. Each member of the quartet is a talented musician in their own right, but together they create a sound that is truly magical. From the intricate melodies to the driving rhythms, every aspect of their performance was flawless, leaving the audience breathless and wanting more. If you have the opportunity to see this group perform live, I would highly recommend it – they are truly one of the best jazz ensembles working today.

The 15th Annual Classic R&B Music Festival in the Poconos was a spectacular event that brought together some of the biggest names in the genre for an unforgettable musical experience.  This all inclusive 5-day vacation of music and memories took place at Kalahari Resorts in the beautiful Poconos Mountains from Oct 2-Oct 6,2022, and featured a lineup of talented artists who delivered electrifying performances that had the crowd dancing and singing along.

One of the headliners of the festival was the legendary Stephanie Mills, with her powerful vocals and known for hit songs like , “Never Knew Love Like This Before”, ” Home”, “Feel The Fire”. and “What Cha Gonna Do With My Love”, had the crowd on their feet with her iconic harmony and smooth choreography.

The Fabulous Ms. Mills was joined by other classic R&B acts like The Intruders, Keith Washington, The Delfonics featuring Wilbert Hart, Force MD’s, First Choice, Harold Melvin’s BlueNotes , Allure, After 7, Regina Belle, The Honey Cone, Black Ivory, Evelyn Champagne-King, Russell Thompkins Jr and the New Stylistics who also brought their soulful sounds to the stage.          

This festival is a perfect opportunity for people who love classic R&B music to come together and enjoy some of the most iconic artists of the genre. It’s a great way to relive the past and remember some of the most classic songs from the golden era of R&B.  It’s an event that should never be missed by any fans of R&B music. 

The HoneyCone

The 15th Annual Classic R&B Music Festival  was not only a celebration of great music but also a celebration of the genre’s rich history. The festival brought together classic R&B acts who have been in the industry for decades and contemporary R&B acts who are shaping the future of the genre.

Another highlight of this incredible music festival was the presentation of The Bernard E. King Legends Award Dinner honoring the host, Maurice “The Voice Watts” for 40 years on Radio and The After 7 Legacy Award.  In 1992, Maurice “The Voice”  Watts “created his own legacy as an on air radio personality of  “The Love Zone”, a show heard around the world from NYC to Tokyo Japan. The After 7 Legacy Awards followed and was presented to current members of the group Kevon Edmonds, Keith Mitchell and Daniel McClain. The group continues to perform and tour the world wowing R&B fans with their energetic performances.

The festival organizers did an incredible job of creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for music lovers of all ages. The crowd was diverse, and everyone was there to have a good time.

The 15th Annual R&B Classic Music festival was a big success and has solidified its place as one of the best R&B Music festivals on the East Coast.

Overall, the 15th Annual Classic R&B Music Festival at Kalahari Resorts  was an unforgettable week of music and memories. With an incredible lineup of talented artists, the festival brought together R&B music lovers of all ages to celebrate the genre and its rich history.  BackBeat R&B can’t wait for the 16th annual festival coming in 2024! The BackBeat R&B Spotlight is on R&B Recording Artist Kenny Stockard!

Kenny Stockard once said,  ” We should Be Lifted Up in Music because that’s my job” and it’s a job he has excelled at very well. The R&B  musician from Pittsburgh is known for his dynamic, powerful, soulful and impressive singing voice.  Kenny grew up singing in churches  and music is just a part of who he is.  Kenny’s calling and passion for music was inspired by his grandfather. He didn’t think he had much of a choice but to become a musician because it’s in his blood.

BackBeat R&B is pleased to do this new Q&A interview with Mr. Kenny Stockard. He discusses his debut album “Chase Chance“, The best advice given to him by another musician and What fans can look forward to in the future from him. 

BB:      Welcome to BackBeat R&B Kenny, so given these unusual Covid-19 times, what does a typical day look like for you and how have you adjusted?

KS:   So, I definitely wake up later than I used to. But I used to wake up between 5-6am and now it’s like 7:30-8 naturally so that’s a good thing lol. I’ve learned rhythms to my day that I didn’t have before the pandemic. I wake up and read, workout, eat then dive into whatever project I’m working on. I’m currently learning more about sound engineering so that takes a lot of my day time work hours. And most evenings I’m either in a rehearsal for shows/recordings or performing around Pittsburgh somewhere haha.

BB:  I read your grandfather was your biggest musical inspiration for getting into this business, what would you like to say to him now that you are on your way to stardom?

KS:  Nothing, he knew who I was when I was born. I would just like to smile at him in gratitude one more time.

BB: . What kind of singer would you classify yourself as?

KS:  I would say I’m a soul singer. I think that speaks to my gospel and R&B influences so I think that’s the most accurate right now. Who knows what kind of singer I’ll be in a decade though. Cause I just go wherever the music takes me.

BB:  Do you play any instruments and write your own songs?

KS: Oh yeah! I play keys, a little guitar, a little bass,drums & trombone. I also write a lot. With others and by myself. I’ve always been a writer.  In 6th grade I used to enter these essay contests at school so I could win 1st place which was Burger King lunches instead of eating the school lunch haha. I had a lot of Burger King that year.

BB: What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?

KS: Well this was said by a great musician in an interview and I’ve taken it to heart. Paraphrased: “Don’t sing on your capital,                sing on your interest” -Leontyne Price 

BB:  You have worked with legends like Willie Nelson and Van Morrison, what was that
great experience like?
KS:  You know it felt like just working with every other musician, they obviously have more money and influence than most of the musicians I’ve worked with. But they’re still humble musicians and it was great to be a part of what they are doing.

BB: Who are your favorite Jazz and R&B Artists ?
KS: Anita Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin,
Otis Redding, Whitney Houston, Ray Charles. I may be missing some but the people I study
and listen to most are these peeps.

BB:  Do you feel the internet has impacted the music business ?

KS: Well, I don’t have experience in the music business that precedes the internet and its influence
but I can speak to what I’ve studied about the differences. With music being released 24/7 listeners expect new music faster than the days of record store releases or just physically having to go somewhere to purchase a record.  I think the internet has given artists who are not attached to a label an opportunity to maintain more control over the business of their music. You can find resources a lot easier now than before the internet to support any idea or vision you have.  The internet also enables your music to become internationally known without leaving your home.

BB:  Tell us something about your debut album, Chase Chance?
KS:  It’s a project that just details some important moments in the past 7 years of my life. My relationship to substances, women, difficulty and to life itself. I’m an optimist and everything spins positively in my brain, no matter how hard, that’s how I get through and I just wanted to share my perspective on the stuff we all go through (dead end jobs, failed relationships,unhealthy coping mechanisms, this pandemic lol).  I also wanted the project itself to be presented as a way of honoring my late sister and so the album is named for her 2 daughters, Chase & Chance, my oldest nieces.

BB:  What is one message that you would like to give your fans and what is next for Kenny Stockard?

KS:  I’d like to say that everything gets better if you stick around long enough to see it. Don’t beat
yourself up over what “should” be, as it pertains to your life, but be thankful for what is and thankful that you’re still here to see even brighter days.

Right now I’m working on a few new things….a book, my next two albums, one of which will feature some of my family…. So many things… just know I wake up everyday intent on working to add something positive to this world so that’s what I’ll be doing until I can’t be doing haha.
